Building the Kingdom: Pentecostalism and ethical-political life in Brazil

15 March 2023, 16:00 - 15 March 2023, 17:30 Divinity Faculty, Room 7

Seminar online and in person

Dr Priscilla Garcia

Abstract:

This seminar will be based on 16 months of fieldwork amongst Pentecostals from one of Brazil’s most politically active megachurches and will argue that the category of the Kingdom of God is central to the development of the ethical and political life of these believers. The paper suggests that ‘Evangelical politics’ is not simply a combination of ‘religion’ and ‘politics’ but rather a phenomenon that believers understand as essential to realising the Kingdom of God. By engaging with this notion, the paper suggests that theopolitical categories such as the ‘Kingdom of God’ may benefit scholars of Christianity in moving beyond the limitations of the religion/politics divide by redefining not only the terms of this relationship but also by relocating where it manifests.
