Protestant Women and the Making of Global Religious Worlds

“Protestant Women and the Making of Global Religious Worlds” will bring together scholars to reconsider the category of a ‘Protestant Woman’. The event will explore how Protestant women have shaped religious worlds across the Global North to the Global South and Eastern Europe. Focusing on questions of gender, scripture, and religious identities, the event will open with a panel discussion followed by a networking session. It offers an opportunity to connect across disciplines and rethink the study of Protestant women across different time periods and cultural contexts.

New Research on Missionaries

During the period of well over a year of pandemic-related restrictions in the UK, one of CCCW’s Research Associates, Ian Randall, has been using the time to do some new research and writing. He has been working on a range of topics, including: the history of the Henry Martyn Trust and CCCW; aspects of the influence of the East African Revival; the missionary and ecumenical work of Alan MacLeod (1911-1984); John Stott as a theologian; Orthodox and evangelical missional interaction; the history of St Andrew’s Street Baptist Church, Cambridge; and a chapter for a book on Simon-Barrington Ward.

Three studies are aimed especially at highlighting material held in CCCW. These are on the papers of Richard A. Minter (1905-1997); on Henry Martyn in Cambridge; and on Florence Allshorn (1887-1950; pictured on previous page) and the St Julian’s Community. These three are available from Ian. If you are interested in them or in any of the other topics, please contact him. ian.m.randall[at]gmail.com

Silver Jubilee Lecture on Solidarity amidst the Pandemic

On Wednesday 26th April, we began our Silver Jubilee lecture series on the theme Transfiguring World Christianity.

Prof. Joanildo Burity (Lead Researcher and Professor at the Joaquim Nabuco Foundation and the Federal University of Pernambuco, Recife, Brazil) delivered a wonderfully insightful and challenging presentation on solidarity amidst the pandemic.

The lecture and discussion was chaired by Rt Revd Dr Graham Kings, Hon. Assistant Bishop in the Diocese of Ely and a research associate of CCCW.

Prof. Burity highlighted the relationship between Christianity and politics in the Brazilian context, and left us with these questions:

‘How can we come to see the stranger as neighbour?’

‘Who confronts us with the nearness of their needs, vulnerability, and difference?’

For those who weren’t able to attend, you can catch the recording on our Youtube channel here.

The next lecture will be given by Dr. David Muir (University of Roehampton) on Christian mission and social engagement, Wednesday, 26th May 2021, 4-6 pm BST. To register, email centre@cccw.cam.ac.uk
