Are you going on an international placement this year? The Cambridge Centre for Christianity Worldwide provides bursaries of up to £1000 each year to individuals undertaking a placement of at least four weeks in a Christian community in a culture other than their own.

We encourage people to cross boundaries and barriers of all kinds, whether that be linguistic, socio-economic, geographic, or all of the above. In so doing, we learn more about God in Christ and more about one another.

Our book of the week this week is a journal issue – Studies in World Christianity: the Edinburgh review of theology and religion: 24,1, 2018

The latest issue of Studies in World Christianity has a new editor, our former CCCW director, Dr Emma Wild-Wood. It also has an article by Dr Brian Stanley, another former CCCW director, who has written an article in memoriam of Dr T. Jack Thompson (1943-2017), a distinguished historian of Malawian and African Christianity. He served as director of the Centre for the Study of World Christianity in Edinburgh from 2005-2008 (Dr Emma Wild-Wood’s new post) and he was a regular contributor to this journal.

We subscribe to this journal and receive print issues three times a year. We have the entire collection, starting in 1995.

The journal seeks to “promote creative thinking and lively scholarly interchange in the interpretation of all aspects of Christianity as a world religion… from historical, theological, and social scientific perspectives… The primary interest of the journal is in the rich diversity of Christian life and thought found in Africa, Asia, Latin America, Oceania, and eastern Europe.”

Our new Research Associate, Dr F. Lionel Young III (PhD, University of Stirling) is the senior pastor of Calvary Church in Valparaiso, Indiana. He has been a pastor in the United States for more than 30 years and has served as a lecturer at theological institutions in various parts of Africa and Asia. As both a pastor and a scholar, Lionel is especially interested in some of the historical and contemporary issues around partnership and shared resources in the global church.

The Henry Martyn Trust is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr Muthuraj Swamy as Director of the Cambridge Centre for Christianity Worldwide.

Dr Muthuraj Swamy (PhD Edinburgh) is currently the Dean of Theology in the Union Biblical Seminary, Pune, India, where he is also the Dean of Postgraduate Studies, and a Visiting Fellow at St. John’s College, Durham University. He comes with rich cross-cultural experience in theological education, world Christianity, interfaith engagement and church involvement. He has published widely and is the author of the recent book The Problem with Interreligious Dialogue: Plurality, Conflict and Elitism in Hindu-Christian-Muslim Relationships (Bloomsbury, 2016).

He has been commissioned to write the Archbishop of Canterbury’s Lent book 2019 on the theme reconciliation (SPCK, London & ISPCK, Delhi, 2019). He is leading the Mission Theology in the Anglican Communion (MTAC) project  and is the Editor of its book series written by theologians from the global South. The MTAC series include three Pre-Lambeth Conference books on the Archbishop of Canterbury’s three priorities – Reconciliation, Evangelism and Witness, and Prayer – in preparation of the Lambeth Conference 2020.

Dr Swamy will take up the post in April 2018.

The artwork, by Helaine Blumenfeld, is made out of Italian marble and took a year to complete and was installed at the Woolf Institute on Thursday 11 January.

Entitled ‘Tree of Life: Encounter’, the 3m (10ft) high work bears three giant intertwined leaves. The biblical inscription on the foundation stone reads “A threefold cord is not easily broken,” taken from Ecclesiastes.

During the last four months of 2017 the library added a number of new books relating to the world Church, dialogue and mission. A considerable number of these focus on the subject of Dalit Christianity in India and were brought to us from India where they were published.

This important research resource of books on Dalit Christianity were given to us by Rev. James Gardom and Rev. Monodeep Daniel, many of them published by the Centre for Dalit/Subaltern Studies in New Delhi. They include a two-volume Dalit Bible commentary and books and pamphlets relating to Dalit theology, issues of justice, human rights and the place of the Dalit community within the Church of North India and the Church of South India.

Some are compilations of conference papers from National Seminars held at the Centre for Dalit Studies, and some are CDS pamphlets. A few of these are on display in our library. The others can be found on the shelves by searching iDiscover for their classmarks, using the bibliographic details given below, and refining your search to our library. Do come by and take a look at these books for yourself.

The Cambridge Centre for Christianity Worldwide library continues to seek purchases of high quality in the field of mission studies and Christianity in the non-western world. If you have any recommendations, do email me.
